John Cena is set for a major spotlight role at WrestleMania 42, but new details suggest the decision came together far later than many expected.
The 17-time WWE Champion, who retired from in-ring competition in December 2025, has confirmed he will return to host WrestleMania 42. However, a report from WrestleVotes Radio, via Fightful Select, claims that role was not part of the original plan at the time of his farewell match.
According to the report, John Cena was not scheduled to host WrestleMania as of December 2025. Instead, the idea was presented to him in February 2026, at which point he agreed to take on the role.
John Cena Has Signed A New WWE Contract
The report also notes that John Cena has signed a new long-term agreement with WWE, although the deal does not include a return to in-ring competition.
WWE’s decision is said to be tied to WrestleMania 42 business. The company has faced criticism over high ticket prices for the event, and has since introduced discounted offers and added fan experiences in an effort to boost attendance.
