John Cena has just one match remaining before he officially ends his in-ring career, and the former multi-time world champion has opened up about why he believes now is the right moment to step away.
Speaking on Bill Simmons’ Podcast, John Cena pushed back on the idea that he is “going out on his own terms”, stressing instead that he would continue wrestling indefinitely if his body allowed it.
“That is bulls**t,” Cena said with a laugh. “I want to do it forever. To anyone out there who does not understand what WWE is, just go live. When you step into that building, it is a different energy. I never want to let that go. But my body hurts, I am a step slower. I promised myself and the fanbase that when I am a step slower, I am out.”
Simmons argued that Cena has been producing some of the strongest matches of his career in recent years, but Cena insisted that the physical toll has been far greater than fans realise.
“It is all I have left,” Cena said. “I want to go out at a level that is still passable and sometimes admirable, not relying on luck. I have given my heart and soul to this year. It has taken a lot to do thirty-five dates when before I would do two hundred and twenty in my sleep. It is time to move on.”
Cena will wrestle his final match on the December 13 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event, facing either Gunther or LA Knight, depending on the outcome of this week’s SmackDown.
How Many Matches Has John Cena Wrestled In 2025?
John Cena has currently wrestled 17 matches for WWE in 2025, with his first match being the Royal Rumble match, where he and Jey Uso were the final two competitors; unfortunately for John, Uso managed to eliminate him to win the Rumble.
Cena’s last match to date was at Survivor Series on November 29, where he lost his Intercontinental Title to Dominik Mysterio. Cena is set to have his 18th match of 2025 and final match ever at Saturday Night’s Main Event next Saturday.
