John Cena has explained why he thinks his match with Gunther was the perfect way to end his career.
On December 13th, at Saturday night’s Main Event, John Cena got in the ring for the last time when he faced Gunther. To the shock of fans, the 17-time World Champion finished his legendary career by tapping out to The Ring General with a smile on his face. The moment has proved as divisive as Cena’s decade at the top of WWE, when fans alternated between cheering and booing the face of the company.
During an appearance at the New Orleans Fan Expo, Cena addressed the controversy, saying he was glad people could express their opinions.
“In losing my last match against Gunther, thank you. Thank you for reminding me that you’re allowed to have your opinion. Thank you for not just conforming to a certain set of standards. Thank you for being vocal enough to express how you felt because every moment can be a teachable moment.
“I put together my job and tried to put together a story that I think you all will enjoy. When there is a critical opinion out there, I’m all ears. I don’t ignore the critics. I’m thankful for them in DC and every match I had before that.”
Reflecting on the similarities to the reactions he used to get, Cena said that it felt like the perfect way to end his career.
“I guess, parallel to my career, it was a perfect end. A whole lot of people thought it sucked, and a whole lot of people thought it was special. That’s kind of been my story for 23 years. I thought it was perfect.”
John Cena Takes Credit For Logan Paul Signing Full-Time WWE Contract
At the same Fan Expo, John Cena claimed he “greased the wheels” to get Logan Paul to sign with WWE full-time. The star explained that he sees a bright future in the YouTube star and wanted to get the best out of him in their match at Clash in Paris in 2025. Cena believes his efforts helped convince Paul to sign his latest contract.
