Joe Hendry has made it clear that becoming a world champion is his ultimate goal after moving to WWE’s main roster.
Having already captured major championships in both TNA and NXT, Hendry is now targeting one of WWE’s two world titles. However, he acknowledges he still has plenty of work to do before he reaches that level.
Speaking on Insight With Chris Van Vliet, Joe Hendry explained that he regularly compares different aspects of his performances to stars such as Roman Reigns and CM Punk to identify where he needs to improve.
“If you’re not in this business to be the world champion, then you are in the wrong business,” Hendry said. “That is why we get into this business. To be the world champion has to be the goal.”
Hendry admitted that those comparisons show him how much further he needs to progress.
“What I do and how I manage that mentally is I have really honest conversations with myself. I go, ‘Am I as good as Roman in this area? Am I as good as CM Punk in this area? Am I as good as insert world champion?’ The answer is there’s work to be done. There’s a long road ahead of me.”
Joe Hendry Aiming To Improve Every Week
Rather than getting discouraged by the distance between his current position and his goal of becoming WWE world champion, Joe Hendry is focused on gradual improvement.
“But the thing I love about it is it’s like, okay, in order for me to cover this ground and get to where I need to go, I’m going to get 1% better every week. How am I going to do that? Okay, I need to do this; I need to do that.”
Hendry pointed to a recent double fallaway slam on Judgment Day members JD McDonagh and Dominik Mysterio as an example of his continued development, having only recently added the move to his arsenal.
His efforts are not limited to what happens inside the ring. Hendry also revealed that he is working on leaning out in the gym as he attempts to achieve what he described as a more aesthetic physique.
The former NXT Champion accepts that he still has a long road ahead before potentially capturing a world championship on WWE’s main roster. However, Hendry is embracing the process rather than allowing the time required to reach that level to discourage him.
