Jim Ross has admitted he was wrong in predicting that Chris Jericho would make a surprise appearance at the Royal Rumble.
The veteran commentator had suggested the former AEW World Champion could appear in the match, but Chris Jericho was not part of the event in Riyadh. Speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, Jim Ross addressed the incorrect prediction and said he had no insider information when making the call.
“I guessed wrong,” Ross said. “I saw a clip on that online that you know, JR, what do you think? Well, I thought he was going to be there, and I didn’t. I said I didn’t have any inside information, and I wasn’t lying the truth. I don’t know. It just seemed like it made sense.”
Ross added that the number of surprises on the show may have made a Jericho appearance unnecessary.
“I think there are so many alleged surprises that they may have thought that adding Jericho to that mix would be a little daunting.”
Does Jim Ross Still Think Chris Jericho Will Return To WWE?
Despite the absence at the Royal Rumble, Jim Ross still believes Chris Jericho will eventually return to WWE. He suggested the decision would not be about money, but about where Jericho wants to end his career.
“I’m assuming he’ll be in the lineup sooner than later, because at his age and at his experience level, what are his other options if he wants to stay on TV and in the business and make a good buck?” Ross said. “I don’t think him going to WWE is a matter over paychecks. I think he wants to end his career in wrestling in WWE, that’s not where it started.”
Ross also reflected on what a potential departure would mean for AEW, noting Jericho’s importance to the company since its launch.
“That’s the big loss for AEW,” Ross said. “Jericho was a major player that is part of the foundation, fabric of AEW. I personally, as a fan, hate to see him leave, but you know, we can check out the tube and watch him on television.”
