Jim Ross has questioned the need for WWE to promote two men’s world champions at the same time, saying the system feels unnecessary and does not sit comfortably with him.
Speaking on the latest edition of Grilling JR, the WWE Hall of Famer and long-time commentator joined Conrad Thompson in breaking down WWE’s hierarchy and how the company positions its top champions across Raw and SmackDown. While Thompson pointed out that the modern structure allows each brand to have a recognised number one star and creates two headline attractions for the now traditional two-night WrestleMania format, Jim Ross remained unconvinced that the approach is required.
“I do not know why they need two champions. That is just to tease a few guys, I guess. I do not know. The two champions does not work with me,” Ross said, calling the split a creative decision he has never fully bought into.
Thompson pressed the logistics, arguing that the brand split makes separate belts functionally useful, but Ross reiterated that preference and tradition matter just as much.
“You can make a reason for it, but is it necessary? I really don’t [think so],” he concluded.
Ross’s comments reflect a debate that has followed WWE since it reintroduced a second men’s world title in 2023. While the company appears committed to the model for now, one of wrestling’s most respected voices continues to advocate for the simplicity of a single undisputed champion.
