Jim Ross has admitted he remains embarrassed by some of the storylines he was involved in during his time with WWE.
The WWE Hall of Fame commentator was frequently used in on-screen angles during his lengthy run with the company, despite being best known for his work behind the commentary desk.
Jim Ross was occasionally placed in matches, including a No Disqualification bout against Triple H in the main event at Madison Square Garden. Ross won the match with help from Batista.
He also teamed with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin against Triple H and Chyna in an intergender tag team match at the Georgia Dome. Speaking on Grilling JR, Ross admitted he was uncomfortable with some of the situations WWE placed him in.
“Some of those skits we did, I don’t call wrestling. I was embarrassed to do them,” Ross said. “I’m still embarrassed to think back on some of the days where I got booked into an angle. Not being in shape. Not being trained. The JR announcer character’s popularity was the only thing that made it work. It wasn’t my skills, for God’s sake.”
Jim Ross Reflects On WWE In-Ring Angles
Jim Ross spent several decades working for WWE across multiple roles, with former chairman Vince McMahon regularly involving the commentator in storylines.
However, Ross believes his popularity with WWE audiences, rather than his wrestling ability, made the angles work. Ross eventually left WWE in 2019 after deciding not to renew his contract. He later said he and McMahon mutually agreed to part ways.
Several weeks later, Ross joined AEW, with the company announcing that he had signed what it described at the time as the “most lucrative deal in pro wrestling commentary history.”
Ross remains with AEW but has dealt with several health issues in recent years. His most recent commentary appearance came at Double or Nothing in May.
