Je’Von Evans has revealed that he feared he had seriously injured his back during his Intercontinental Championship match against Penta earlier this year.
Je’Von Evans challenged Penta for the title on the May 25 episode of Raw, marking the first time the two had competed against each other. Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Evans admitted he was excited to face someone he had watched since Penta’s time as Pentagon Jr. in Lucha Underground. However, one particular aspect of the match had him nervous beforehand.
“Yeah, bro. It’s actually such a great match, bro. That was my first time going against Penta. And I was marking out because I’ve always watched Penta, especially in Lucha Underground,” Evans said. I was just so nervous about, like, taking his chops because, you know, his chops on Lucha Underground is so loud.”
Ultimately, Penta’s chops were the least of Evans’ concerns. While reflecting on the match, Evans revealed that he came close to breaking his back during a planned dive to the outside.
“I almost broke my back in that match too.”
Evans explained that the spot was supposed to see him dive towards Penta, who would catch him and redirect him over the announce table. However, the positioning did not work as intended.
“I think the table was, like, not far. So, like, he tried to grab me and I tried to, like, post off his shoulder, but it just didn’t go off well.”
Evans realised while in the air that he was not going to clear the table. Faced with the prospect of landing face or chest-first, he attempted to adjust his body in mid-air.
“And I shifted my body and literally, like, my tailbone, like, my exact tailbone, hit the edge of the table.”
Although Evans avoided a potentially more serious landing, the impact left him in significant pain.
“Bro, that was probably, like, one of the worst things I’ve ever felt ever,” Evans said. “And I think I had a bump on my tailbone, bro, like, for a couple weeks after that.”
Je’Von Evans Recalls Having Painful Flight After Suffering The Injury During His Raw Match
Je’Von Evans finished the match, but the effects continued after he left the arena. The WWE star recalled limping while travelling to the airport before having to endure a flight while dealing with the injury.
“I think, like, on the way to the airport, I had, like, a limp, and then we had a plane ride, you know? So I’m like, I’m just going through it during the plane ride.”
Despite avoiding a broken back, Evans ranked the tailbone injury among the three worst injuries he has suffered during his career.
