JBL believes lucha libre is reaching a new level of popularity following WWE’s acquisition of Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide.
The partnership has brought AAA greater exposure through events like Worlds Collide, where wrestlers from the promotion have competed alongside and against WWE and NXT talent.
Speaking on Something to Wrestle, JBL, who currently works as an announcer for AAA, discussed the promotion’s recent momentum and his belief that lucha libre has significant potential.
“We’ve always thought that if Lucha started taking over, it would take over, and I think that’s what you’re seeing right now,” he said.
The WWE Hall of Famer also praised the recent TripleMania events, including the Copa Bardahl Battle Royal.
JBL Praises Omos’ Progress In AAA
JBL singled out Omos as someone who has benefited from working in AAA, believing the former WWE star has continued to develop under the guidance of The Undertaker and the promotion’s producers.
“There’s a lot of great producers that are down in AAA, some incredible guys that have some really good knowledge about what Omos needs to do; but also, what everybody needs to do there,” he said.
Having been at ringside for TripleMania events in both Las Vegas and Mexico City, JBL also compared the atmosphere generated by the two crowds.
“As great as the Vegas crowds were, and it was good, it’s nothing compared to a Mexican crowd,” he said.
He praised Mexican wrestling fans for their passion, although he still considered the Las Vegas event a success. According to the former WWE Champion, attendance for the Friday night show was ultimately three times higher than WWE had anticipated.
Another AAA wrestler to impress JBL was Daga, the leader of Los Perros del Mal.
JBL specifically compared Daga to the late Eddie Guerrero, who became one of WWE’s biggest stars after establishing himself in Mexico, Japan, and WCW earlier in his career.
