Janel Grant has taken a significant legal step in her ongoing case against WWE and Vince McMahon, challenging whether her claims should be handled in private arbitration or in open court.
On April 1, Janel Grant filed a memorandum opposing attempts by WWE and Vince McMahon to move the case into private arbitration. Her legal team argues that the non-disclosure agreement she signed should not be enforceable and should not prevent the case from being heard in open court.
The filing centres on whether the NDA can legally block the case from proceeding publicly. Grant’s lawyers are pushing for the matter to remain in court, rather than behind closed doors, in what represents a direct challenge to one of the key legal strategies from WWE and McMahon.
As part of the memorandum, Grant’s legal team outlined details from early interactions in 2019, when she says she was in contact with McMahon while pursuing employment with WWE. Those conversations are now being used to question how matters were handled internally and whether the NDA should apply.
One claim highlighted in the filing alleges that McMahon referenced his longtime attorney, Jerry McDevitt, while discussing how issues are dealt with.
“Around this time, Vince mentioned that he had an attorney, Jerry McDevitt, on speed dial who was the best at making problems, including people who become problems, go away,” the filing states.
Janel Grant’s New Filing Claims WWE Top Brass Knew Of Her Relationship With Vince McMahon
The updated filings also include new allegations regarding what senior WWE figures were told about the situation. In her declaration, Janel Grant claims Vince McMahon informed her that he had disclosed the nature of their relationship to WWE president Nick Khan and former COO Brad Blum in March 2021.
According to the filing, Grant alleges McMahon told her both executives expressed concern, including questioning whether she could be trusted, before ultimately accepting reassurances about her loyalty.
Grant’s filing also raises claims surrounding the departure of former WWE General Counsel Brian Nurse. She alleges McMahon indicated that Nurse had become aware of the relationship and raised concerns internally, after which the situation was “handled,” something Grant says she understood to mean Nurse’s exit from the company.
Nurse served as WWE’s General Counsel from 2018 until his departure in November 2020. Blum later resigned from WWE in May 2024. There has been no public comment from Khan or Blum regarding the allegations.
The outcome of Grant’s latest motion could prove pivotal in determining how the case proceeds. If the court sides with her, the lawsuit will remain in the public domain, allowing further filings and details to emerge. If not, the case could be moved into private arbitration, where proceedings would largely remain out of public view.
Either way, the latest developments place renewed focus on the use of NDAs and the level of awareness within WWE’s leadership, as the case continues to unfold.
