Jake Roberts is approaching 14 years of sobriety, and according to Diamond Dallas Page, the WWE Hall of Famer is thriving both personally and professionally.
Speaking on Wrestling Life, DDP revealed that Jake Roberts has also reunited with his ex-wife, Cheryl, with the two now appearing together at autograph signings. Page said there was a time when he constantly worried about Roberts relapsing, but those fears eventually faded as Roberts continued to stay sober.
“We’re coming up on the 14th year of Jake being sober, and I don’t even think about it anymore,” Page said. “I could have a drink around him or whatever. He don’t care.”
Page admitted the early years of Roberts’ recovery were much different. He estimated it took about five years before he stopped worrying that the wrestling legend might fall back into old habits.
“There’s certain guys you wonder, ‘God, I hope he doesn’t go back again,’” Page said. “And I felt like that about Jake for about five years, but now we’re coming up on the 14th year of Jake being sober and I don’t even think about it anymore.”
Page also recalled conversations he had with Roberts during his recovery, noting that the former WWE star once tried to justify drinking in moderation.
“He really used to say, ‘I’m a man. I can. I deserve three beers. I could have three beers,’” Page said. “At some point I said, ‘When you’re really a man, it’ll be, I don’t need three beers. I don’t want three beers, because I know what comes after that, and it’s never any good.’”
Jake Roberts’ Recovery Documented In The Resurrection Of Jake The Snake
Jake Roberts’ road to recovery was famously documented in the 2015 film The Resurrection of Jake the Snake, which chronicled his time living at Page’s “accountability crib” in Atlanta while working through addiction with the help of DDP Yoga and a structured support system.
Since then, Page has continued helping other wrestlers through similar recovery programs, most recently with the Change or Die series on his YouTube channel.
