WWE Hall of Famer Jake Roberts has confirmed he re-signed with WWE after leaving AEW earlier this year.
Jake Roberts revealed the news during an appearance on Saturday’s Nick Club Wrestling Happy Hour, hosted by Nick Teodoro, where he discussed his wrestling career and his experiences working for both companies. When asked what he had been doing recently, Roberts confirmed that he was no longer associated with AEW and had begun working with WWE again.
“Staying busy. Not in AEW anymore. Re-signed with WWE, doing some stuff for them and just enjoying life, man,” Roberts said.
The wrestling legend did not elaborate on the nature of his new WWE agreement or what his responsibilities would involve. Roberts previously confirmed his departure from AEW in July, ending a six-year association with the promotion that began in 2020.
During his time with AEW, Jake Roberts primarily managed Lance Archer, although his television appearances became less frequent toward the end of his tenure. Later in July, Roberts made his first official WWE appearance in several years when he attended the SummerSlam Takeover event at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The Hall of Famer met fans, signed autographs and posed for photographs during the event.
Jake Roberts Discusses AEW Creative And Tony Khan
During the interview, Jake Roberts was also asked about the differences between working for WWE and AEW. He identified creative direction as the biggest distinction between the promotions, suggesting that AEW President Tony Khan could make better use of the talent available to him.
“Creative, number one. No doubt. Tony Khan needs to loosen up the reins a little bit,” Roberts said. “He’s got a good product. He’s got a lot of talent in there. I think his talent could be used better.”
Despite his criticism, Roberts spoke positively about his personal relationship with Khan, describing him as “a sweet guy” and explaining that he enjoyed working for him. Roberts also expressed disappointment with how Archer was used during his time with AEW, arguing that the former IWGP United States Champion deserved more opportunities.
“He has never gotten the break he deserves. He really hasn’t. It’s a damn shame,” Roberts said.
Elsewhere in the conversation, Roberts was asked whether any modern wrestlers reminded him of his own distinctive style. He named Randy Orton and the late Bray Wyatt, who died in August 2023, as performers who shared similarities with his approach to professional wrestling. Roberts also explained the origins of his famously understated interview style, revealing that an early-career injury permanently affected his ability to raise his voice.
“One of the things was I got a knee drop to my throat when I first started wrestling and it crushed my voice box. So, I can’t scream. I can’t holler. If I try, nothing comes out,” Roberts explained. “And I just didn’t like doing those type of interviews. It didn’t seem real. So, I didn’t do it.”
The veteran also discussed the many variations of his signature DDT finishing move used by wrestlers today, insisting that he still preferred his original version.
“You got to go back to the classic one that still works. If I did it, you didn’t get up. So, I’ll stick with mine,” Roberts said.
Although Jake Roberts has now confirmed his return to WWE, it remains unclear whether his new agreement will include television appearances, promotional work, or another behind-the-scenes role.
