IYO SKY may be considered one of WWE’s best wrestlers, but she believes Rey Mysterio remains in a class of his own.
IYO SKY has become one of WWE’s most decorated women since joining the company, with her high-flying style helping her capture multiple championships. During an interview with Ringer Wrestling, SKY was asked about Michael Cole regularly referring to her as the “Best Wrestler on the Planet” on WWE television.
“Yeah, I really hope so. I’m doing my best, but I cannot say I am the best,” SKY said.
While appreciative of Cole’s praise, SKY instead pointed towards the wrestler she has looked up to throughout her career.
“[For] my entire life, my favorite wrestler is Rey Mysterio. He’s my idol forever.”
IYO SKY Discusses Rey Mysterio’s Incredible Longevity
At 51, Rey Mysterio remains an active WWE performer more than three decades after beginning his professional wrestling career. IYO SKY was asked whether she could see herself following Mysterio’s example and continuing to perform her high-risk style at 50.
“50? 50 years old? Yeah, I hope, but my answer is no,” SKY said. “My style is very different. I cannot imagine [me] putting my trash can on my head and [jumping] from the edge at 50 years old.”
SKY’s aerial offence, including her Over the Moonsault finishing move, has previously led to comparisons with the WWE Hall of Famer. Kevin Nash addressed those comparisons last year and rejected the idea that another wrestler could easily be compared with Mysterio.
Nash described Mysterio as a “one-in-a-billion” talent and said that while he had nothing against SKY personally, he preferred watching someone such as Sol Ruca compete. For SKY herself, however, there is no question about the influence Mysterio has had on her career, with the former WWE Women’s Champion describing him as her lifelong idol.
