Gunther has opened up about his match with Goldberg, revealing he aimed to deliver one of the best performances of the WWE Hall of Famer’s career.
Speaking on WWE Retrospective, Gunther looked back on their clash at Saturday Night’s Main Event last year, which served as Goldberg’s retirement match. He described the opportunity as both exciting and surreal, given Goldberg’s larger-than-life reputation.
“When I came up in wrestling and watched Goldberg matches, the most exciting part was always that something catastrophic could happen at any time,” Gunther said. “I wanted to wrestle Bill Goldberg, and I wanted to have the best match he maybe ever had.”
The Ring General said his focus was on making the most of the moment and ensuring the match lived up to expectations, while also acknowledging the unique experience of sharing the ring with a childhood favourite.
“It was kind of surreal… I used to play that guy on the N64 with my friends.”
He also praised the presentation of the match, noting the return of Saturday Night’s Main Event added to the atmosphere, and highlighted the strong crowd reaction in favour of Goldberg during key moments.
“At the end of the day it’s all about big characters… everyone knows Goldberg.”
