Gunther has reflected on the similarities between his defeat of John Cena and Brock Lesnar ending The Undertaker’s streak at WrestleMania 30.
At Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13th, Gunther defeated John Cena in the 17-time World Champion’s final match. Not only that, but The Ring General forced Cena to tap out, flying in the face of the ‘Never give up’ attitude Cena built over his two-decade career. The decision did not go down well with fans, and Triple H was forced to defend the booking of the match later in the night.
Another legendary moment that shocked and outraged WWE fans was Brock Lesnar’s win over The Undertaker at WrestleMania 30. At the time, The Deadman was undefeated at WrestleMania, having racked up 21 consecutive wins at the Showcase of the Immortals. Vince McMahon’s decision is still controversial to this day, with fans and figures in the pro-wrestling industry still arguing that the streak should never have ended.
Comparing his win over Cena to Lesnar’s defining victory, Gunther said the “real outrage” from the fans was the same for both, but ultimately he believes it was the right decision.
“Yeah, I think maybe you can make it because I think back about that. It was a similar situation. It was, like, a real outrage about it, and it was the right thing back then because Brock (Lesnar), he’s still in the company, and he was the mountain to climb for 10 years now… I don’t know how long ago that he ended the streak.”
Gunther Admits Ending John Cena’s Career Comes With Some Pressure
Gunther went on to say that his achievement at Saturday Night’s Main Event was a “gift,” and now he feels pressure to live up to the expectations of being the man who defeated John Cena in his final match.
“It is a similar situation that also comes with a bit of pressure because at the end of the day, what I achieved that night is a gift and now it’s on me to protect that gift and yeah, keep it up and that’s the challenge for me now and judge me after — how I did.”
The Ring General could face his next big challenge very soon, as it has been reported that Gunther will face none other than Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 42.
