Gunther says he has no interest in changing his approach in WWE, despite suggestions that he could eventually transition into a fan favourite.
Since signing with WWE, the Austrian star has largely been presented as a dominant heel, both as part of Imperium and as a singles competitor. While some veterans, including Tommy Dreamer, have suggested The Ring General could eventually work as a babyface, the former World Heavyweight Champion appears comfortable in his current role.
Speaking during an appearance on The Morning Shift on 92.9 The Game, Gunther addressed the possibility of becoming a fan favourite and made it clear that he prefers to stay true to his own philosophy.
“I’m not even sure how much of it is a rouse, to be honest. Yeah, just in general, it’s very easy for me,” Gunther said. “I’m an old soul. I listen to old music, I watch older movies in a time when our audience mostly has TikTok brain and the attention span of a two-year-old. I love to be the disruptor who doesn’t play along with that trend.”
Gunther Says Wrestlers Should Focus On In-Ring Work Rather Than Impressing Audiences
Gunther added that he believes professional wrestling should focus on fundamentals rather than simply chasing audience approval.
“It’s proper technique, it’s proper basics, it’s authenticity, it’s making people question what’s real, and that’s what I’m focusing on,” he explained.
The former champion also admitted he does not concern himself with what fans may want from him, saying he enjoys taking a different approach from many of his peers.
“I couldn’t care less what the audience wants,” Gunther said. “I enjoy being the disruptor.”
