Former WWE star Gangrel has recalled a Vince McMahon prank that led to him spraying blood over Donald Trump.
During the Attitude Era, Gangrel was known for spitting out blood during his entrances, although it rarely affected the fans in attendance. On one occasion in Madison Square Garden, though, future president Donald Trump was on the receiving end of a bloodbath.
In an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Gangrel said that he was unexpectedly called in to wrestle Kane at a house show in Madison Square Garden in the late 1990s.
“This is a house show, a Sunday not a Monday, Kane nor I were scheduled to be in the Garden. For whatever reason we weren’t on that loop. Out of nowhere they said, ‘Hey, you’ve been added onto the Garden.’ Oh cool, that’s a great payday. The Garden’s magic. It’s always good. then I’m working Kane, I go, ‘Oh, well, three minutes, it’s a great payday for three minutes.”
The former Brood leader says the New York crowd seemed more excited than usual as he made his entrance, so he leaned into it and drank even more of the blood than usual so that he could reciprocate with more spray.
“I go to go to the ring, I’m walking, and then I could hear the crowd. It’s the Garden, though, so the crowd was extra amped. I see a guy, somebody sitting there, and I go, ‘That person doesn’t belong there.’ But I got the shades on, and there’s the red lights, so it’s kind of hard to tell with things on.”
“I go to go up the ramp, and people like, ‘whoa,’ and I’m like, ‘oh, they’re really digging me in the Garden.’ So my ego’s going. I go to drink the blood, and you could really hear the crowd go, ‘ohhh,’ louder than I’ve ever done before. And you’re like, ‘I don’t even do this on a pay-per-view, this is awesome!’ ”
“I chug down extra zesty mint. I take every last drop down deep as I could take it, and when I go to spray it, I just hear the crowd roaring. So, I just let out with one, and I let it out up, and I let it out long.”
He later found out that the real reason the fans were going crazy was that they could see what was about to happen to Donald Trump, who was right in the firing line for the spray.
“Apparently, they were going crazy because it was Donald Trump down there with his girl. The fans were trying to touch him and warn him, so he was pulling away and moving closer to the barricade. He was going more into the spray zone, like the Gallagher zone. When I hear [the crowd], like, ‘Ohhh,’ I sprayed extra hard. If you see in some of the WWE Magazines, they put a little, quite modest thing, it said, “Duck Donald Duck.”
Donald Trump & Gangrel Were Both Pranked By Vince McMahon
Later in the night, Stephanie McMahon told Gangrel that Vince McMahon wasn’t happy that he had spit all over his friend, Donald Trump, wanted to see him in his office the next day. After leaving the star to worry over what would happen to him, though, McMahon laughed about it, leading him to realise it was a rib on him as well as Trump.
“I walk in, and he goes, ‘Wasn’t that great?’”
“Tunrs out it was a double rib. He knew that he was coming, so he put his seats there, booked me on the show, flew me in, knew I’m a drone of an idiot. That no matter what, I’m gonna spray that blood, because that’s just what I do. I just do what I’m told. Then it was a double rib on me for spitting, thinking I might get fired for it.
“Apparently, she had this mink, a certain type of sweater, cashmere or something like that. So when she came in, they had already sized that up, and they already had a runner with a backup one. So it was mapped out. Everything was mapped out.
“So, I can say I spit on a future president.”
Donald Trump regularly attended WWE events over the years, but he is most remembered for getting involved in a ‘Battle of the Billionaires’ feud with Vince McMahon. During the feud, Trump made several appearances on WWE TV, and one star says that during that time, the Hall of Famer refused to sell for him because he didn’t want to “show fear.”
