Gangrel believes WWE’s CCO Triple H may have blocked plans for him to reunite with Edge during the Hall of Famer’s Brood-inspired entrance at WrestleMania 39, although he admits he does not know exactly who made the decision.
Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Gangrel reflected on the plans surrounding Edge’s Hell in a Cell match against Finn Balor, revealing he suspects WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque may have vetoed the idea.
“I’m not sure, but I think maybe it might have been Hunter. Some people said Vince, but I think it might have been Hunter,” he said. “Somebody kiboshed it.”
Gangrel explained that Adam Copeland was keen for the reunion to happen, even if WWE was not.
“In Edge’s mind, yes, he was trying hard. But in their minds, no, I don’t think so,” he said.
Copeland previously revealed that WWE’s response was that fans would not remember Gangrel. While Gangrel confirmed that the explanation was passed on to him, he believes there was more behind the decision.
“That’s what they said, that’s what he said. But I think there’s a little bit more to it. I don’t know what it is, but I think it was a little bit more,” he said.
He also recalled a separate WWE deal that collapsed despite appearing close to completion. Gangrel, who owns the trademark to his ring name, said WWE requested additional documentation regarding ownership of the name before communication suddenly stopped.
“So it’s something weird. It’s a little bit more to it,” he said.
Gangrel Remains Active On The Independent Scene Despite WWE Return Plans Being Scrapped
Despite missing out on WrestleMania 39, Gangrel said he has remained busy on the independent scene and has no regrets about continuing his career outside WWE.
“At this point, I’ve motored on and done my own thing for so long that it would be great to go back in some kind of form or fashion and do something,” he said. “But at the same time, I’ve been busier than I’ve ever been busy.”
Gangrel also credited Copeland for bringing him into AEW following the latter’s move to the promotion in 2023.
“He’s a guy that wants to have his way. Don’t tell him no on something, he’s gonna figure it out,” he said, explaining that Copeland organised his AEW appearance alongside House of Black.
He added that his other AEW appearances also came at the request of wrestlers rather than company management, praising Copeland, Matt Hardy and The Young Bucks for continuing to support him throughout his career.
