Former WWE star Rob Conway revealed that Vince McMahon once compared his in-ring ability to Bret Hart’s.
Rob Conway is best remembered in WWE for teaming with Sylvain Grenier as La Résistance before later moving into singles competition with his “Conway’s Law” character.
Speaking on INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet, Conway recalled McMahon pulling him and Grenier aside during their run together and offering some significant praise for his wrestling ability.
“He said, ‘Rob, I consider you to just be one tier below Bret Hart as a worker,’” Conway recalled. “He said: ‘But you have a gimmick. You need to not worry about having such good matches. You gotta work the gimmick.’”

According to Rob Conway, Vince McMahon rarely told La Résistance to go out and have a good match. Instead, he reminded them to wave their flags because generating a reaction through their characters mattered more.
Conway said he and Grenier eventually understood that their role was not necessarily to produce highly rated matches, but to generate heat from the audience. When Conway later became a singles wrestler, he was already confident McMahon rated his in-ring ability.
“And so, whenever I became a singles wrestler, I already knew that Vince liked my in-ring ability,” Conway said.
Conway also worked on transforming his physique and appearance as he moved into his singles run. He recalled one occasion when McMahon was pleased with a promo he had delivered but still wanted him to record it again for an unusual reason.
“One time I did a promo, and it went really good, and once I got it done and he goes: ‘You need to do it again; you need more oil,’” Conway said.
Although Conway stressed that WWE never promised him anything, he believed his singles push was initially moving towards the Intercontinental Championship.
“I was never promised anything, but I felt like… Where I was going at the beginning was towards the Intercontinental Championship; that’s kinda the stepping stone to being like a main event.”
