Drew McIntyre has revealed why he stopped bringing his trademark sword to the ring, saying the weapon no longer fit his WWE character after his defeat at Clash at the Castle.
The Scottish wrestler began carrying the sword, named Angela in honour of his late mother, during the November 16, 2020 episode of Monday Night Raw. It subsequently became a regular feature of his entrance, reflecting his Scottish heritage.
However, Drew McIntyre eventually abandoned the sword as his character underwent a darker transformation after losing to Roman Reigns at Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Wales, on September 3, 2022. Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, McIntyre said the decision was part of his character’s natural evolution.
“Evolution. I’ve been carrying it for a while. I would love to bring it back for a special entrance or the likes, or maybe for a period of time because I loved having it. I’m proud of my Scottish roots,” McIntyre said.
He added that carrying a large sword no longer felt appropriate when portraying the emotional consequences of his character’s setbacks.
“But yeah, the way the character was evolving through that period, from losing the big match at Clash of the Castle in front of my family, etc. and you know the downward spiral. It felt weird to go real deep with the character, and you know really go into the trauma and the PTSD of the character, and stand there with a giant sword in my hand while I’m trying to sell that story.”
Drew McIntyre Reveals Unusual WWE Sword Idea Pitched To Vince McMahon
Drew McIntyre also recalled pitching an idea to former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon that would have let him finally use the sword in a storyline. Inspired by the realistic battle sequences in Saving Private Ryan, McIntyre suggested filming a backstage confrontation in which his character would appear to sever someone’s arm.
“They use like actors, like amputees, etc. They lop off the limbs; they’re actually missing. Very realistic,” McIntyre explained. “We should have a fight sequence. We end up backstage. Then we hit the pre-tape where I swing the sword at somebody. Whoosh, arms comes off. Finally, I use the sword. Pay it off.”
McIntyre joked that after carrying the weapon for so long, he wanted the opportunity to put it to use.
“I’m stickler for details, and I’ve had this sword for so long, I have to, I have to stab someone,” he said.
Although the proposed WWE segment never materialised, McIntyre revealed that he will finally get to use a sword on screen in Agent of Shadows, an upcoming microdrama produced by WWE and ReelShort.
The project is scheduled to premiere on ReelShort on October 23. McIntyre previously discussed the idea on The Joe Vulpis Podcast, joking that the new production would finally give him the opportunity he had been waiting for.
“Finally, all those years later, Agent of Shadows, Drew McIntyre is going to go shanking. I’m stabbing some people,” McIntyre said.
While McIntyre remains open to bringing Angela back for a special WWE entrance, he has not indicated when the sword might return to his wrestling presentation.
