Diamond Dallas Page believes a former WWE champion deserves far more recognition for both his wrestling career and the work he has done since leaving the ring.
Speaking on What Do You Wanna Talk About? with Cody Rhodes, Diamond Dallas Page praised former WWE and WCW star Marc Mero, describing him as one of the industry’s most underappreciated figures.
“Marc Mero is one of the sweetest human beings on the planet,” Page said.
Page highlighted Mero’s post-wrestling career as a motivational speaker, noting that he regularly speaks to young people about mental health and life challenges. Recalling one of Mero’s most memorable presentations, Page said the former wrestler had a powerful impact on hundreds of teenagers as he discussed his relationship with his mother.
“There’s freaking all these 700/800 teenagers, and they’re crying,” Page said. “And he’s hitting ’em right between the heart.”
According to Page, the viral success of that speech led to a huge increase in demand for Mero’s appearances.
“That video would go on, that month he had 3,000 requests for bookings,” he said.
Diamond Dallas Page Reflects On Marc Mero Being The First Wrestler To Get A Guaranteed Contract From WWE
Diamond Dallas Page also reflected on Marc Mero’s wrestling career, noting that he was the first performer to secure a guaranteed contract with WWE, a move that changed the industry but also created resentment among some wrestlers at the time.
“A lot of guys were mad,” Page said. “But, to me, I would be like, ‘That means I could get guaranteed money.'”
While Mero never reached the top of the card during the Attitude Era, Page believes his contributions to the business, both inside and outside the ring, deserve far greater appreciation.
