Cody Rhodes has spoken about how he almost chose a different career path after he left WWE in 2016.
Speaking on an episode of “ALL THE SMOKE: Unplugged“, Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes spoke about a variety of WWE-related topics, including the future of The Rock‘s ‘final boss’ character, his plans for retirement, and also what plans he made when he left WWE in 2016.
Rhodes requested his release from WWE in May 2016, citing frustrations with the company’s creative department and lack of development for him and his character, as he wanted to end the “Stardust” character he was portraying at the time, but his requests were ignored.
After leaving the company, Rhodes began working on the independent scene and then founded AEW with The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega in 2019 before rejoining WWE in 2022. However, his career could have gone in a completely different direction in 2016, as Rhodes said he considered going back to school to get a degree so he could coach amateur wrestling. Rhodes stated:
“I thought about going and getting a degree because in Georgia, if you have a degree, you can be a wrestling coach. I was really into amateur wrestling [as a kid]. I was the only one in my family who did folkstyle, freestyle, Greco-Roman. I thought I’d be a really good coach.”
When Does Cody Rhodes Plan To Retire From Wrestling?
Cody Rhodes spoke about when he plans to call it quits on wrestling, and said that his next WWE contract will be his last. Rhodes signed a deal in 2022 that is still active, and although it is not known how long it’ll be active for, top stars are currently signing five-year contracts, so it would stand to reason that this deal will end in 2027, and then another five-year deal will see him remain with WWE until 2032, when Rhodes will be 47 years old.
