Cody Rhodes would like to see house shows come to WWE programming.
On the latest episode of his podcast, What Do You Wanna Talk About?, Rhodes raised the idea.
“I had suggested to them, I said, ‘Run one weekend a month. Call them house shows. Make them almost poke the fourth wall a little bit in terms of what they are,” he said.
He believes the house show environment makes for fun and unpredictable matches.
“They’re canon but they’re not. You’re going to see some of the stuff you see on TV but it’s going to be a bit more of a mixed bag. Maybe you’re going to see some people you’ve never seen before who are getting their first reps in front of you. Run them that way, where there’s an intimacy to them that’s advertised: ‘This is a house show. That’s what you guys are getting and it’s going to be awesome.’ They’re so fun, so fun.” he said.
Since launching the WWE Network, WWE has only made older house shows available to watch and only incorporating a few live ones like Smackville (2019) and The Shield’s Final Chapter (2019). House shows in general tend to feature some match-ups that aren’t part of current WWE angles and the superstars have more freedom because what happens on them is usually not fed into current angles. For example, recently Bron Breakker was suspended by Raw GM Adam Pearce. Bron still wrestled though during the WWE’s tour of Europe ignoring the current storyline.
Back in 1995, WWE did introduce the In Your House monthly shows which were lower-priced monthly PPVs at $15.00 a month. The shows has less featured, main event talent but were a popular staple. WWE pulled the plug on them in 1999.
