Cody Rhodes has no plans to reveal the true reason behind his and Brandi Rhodes’ departures from AEW, but he admits the decision not to talk has brought its own problems.
In February 2022, Cody Rhodes made the shock announcement that he and Brandi were leaving AEW. The news came as a surprise as the pair were instrumental in the beginnings of the promotion alongside Tony Khan, The Young Bucks, and Kenny Omega.
While The American Nightmare has hinted at the reason for the decision in the past, neither he nor Khan has ever provided details of why he left the company and returned to WWE. Most recently, he suggested he felt “disrespected” towards the end of his tenure there, although has also admitted there was still “respect and love.”
During an appearance on The Breakfast Club, Rhodes was asked about a past comment where he called Brandi “selfless” for not discussing the matter. He explained that while bad things happened, there were good things too.
“Our departure from when we left the company we were with and helped create, and that was AEW, it came down to her deciding to not talk about it, that departure. Like, ‘We’re not going to talk about it. We’re moving on. Did bad stuff happen? Good stuff happened too. I’m not going to talk about it.’
“No One’s Been Even Close” – Cody Rhodes On AEW Departure Speculation
Continuing, Cody Rhodes said the sad thing about not speaking out about the departure is that fans have created their own narratives, and nobody has been close to guessing the real story.
“And one of the sad things about not talking about why we left and the departure, one of the difficult things was narratives get created. Stories get told, podcasts happen, fans literally think they know what happened when no one’s been even close.
“And what I would say is the selfless part, she lives with that. She owns that. She respects not just here, but the place we left enough to, ‘I’m not going to talk about that.’ And that made it so that — they’re good. They’re out of here. That was very, very helpful for us. And again, good stuff happened there too. But that’s what I mean by selfless, because she lives with that.”
After leaving AEW, Cody Rhodes returned to WWE at WrestleMania 38, where he defeated Seth Rollins. Now a three-time Undisputed WWE Champion, he is heading into his fourth WrestleMania main event on the weekend of April 18th, where he will put the gold on the line against Randy Orton.
