CM Punk has opened up about a health issue he has rarely discussed publicly, revealing that he has suffered from recurring vertigo for years.
The WWE star discussed the issue during an appearance on Hot Ones Extra Heat, which was filmed at the WWE Performance Center with host Sean Evans. Asked about injuries that still affect him, CM Punk revealed that a fractured skull resulted in recurring problems with vertigo.
“Well, we’re going to knock on wood because we’re talking about injuries. I have had my fair share,” Punk said. “I fractured my skull once. This is the one that recurs every once in a while because after I fractured my skull, I developed vertigo really bad.”
Punk admitted that he has rarely spoken publicly about the condition, partly because of the reaction he has received when discussing it.
“Also, one I haven’t really talked about too much because you talk about that, and people kind of look at you, you know, like the doctors. They’ll be like, ‘Hmm.’”
CM Punk Has Wrestled Matches While Experiencing Vertigo
CM Punk explained that he was told the skull fracture affected structures within his inner ear responsible for maintaining his equilibrium.
“What happened was I fractured my skull, and there are some bones in your inner ear that help with equilibrium, and those kind of basically were like dice inside a cup, and got rattled around and thrown around,” Punk said. “So sometimes those still get knocked loose. And if I lay down and look straight up, the world spins.”
The former WWE Champion then revealed that the problem has occurred while he has been competing inside the ring. Punk said some matches that have received praise from wrestling fans took place while he was actively experiencing symptoms of vertigo.
“So there’s been a lot of matches that you see that you know a lot of people are impressed with, where I’m full on going through about a vertigo, and I don’t know what’s going on.”
Punk ended the discussion on a lighter note by joking about one aspect of his in-ring offence.
“And I will also now blame the crookedness of my moonsault on my vertigo.”
