CM Punk believes professional wrestling fans have a unique relationship with the business, arguing that no one can love and criticise wrestling quite like its own audience.
The WWE star discussed wrestling fandom during a new appearance on Hot Ones: Extra Heat, where the conversation initially centred around his longtime love of the Friday the 13th horror franchise. CM Punk was asked how he would approach rebooting the series and explained that being a passionate fan often leads to picking apart the things you love most.
“Yeah. I mean, give me a pen, a paper, and a budget, and I’m your huckleberry,” Punk said. “That’s one of those, because I’m such a fan, I’m constantly…this makes me relate with the wrestling fan, right? The wrestling fans who’s like, ‘Ah, this stinks,’ and they just, you know, like nobody hates wrestling more than wrestling fans. Nobody loves wrestling more than wrestling fans.”
CM Punk Understands Why Wrestling Fans Are So Critical
CM Punk made it clear he wasn’t criticising wrestling fans from the outside, admitting he behaves similarly when discussing franchises he is passionate about. The former WWE Champion used his own relationship with Friday the 13th as an example of why passionate fans can be highly critical while still following something they love.
“I am one of them, and I get it when it comes to the properties that I really like,” Punk said. “I’m cautiously optimistic, we should be getting a new Friday The 13th movie like once a year, every two years. It’s been a drought, it’s time to end the drought.”
Punk’s comments reflect his belief that much of the criticism directed at professional wrestling stems from the same passion that keeps fans invested in the product.
