Chad Gable has explained how The Undertaker was able to “light a fire” under him.
For much of his time as El Grande Americano, Chad Gable was working with The Undertaker in AAA. During a recent interview with Cody Rhodes on What Do You Wanna Talk About?, the star explained how The Deadman had inspired him in a way others had failed to.
“As far as Undertaker goes, I think he gets the credit for pulling something out of me that a number of people have tried to over the years and just haven’t been able to, and for whatever reason, he was.”
Gable said that he was used to trying to please his coaches and give them what they wanted from him, but he became frustrated at his inability to do that for The Undertaker.
“I’ve always had these coaching figures in my life through amateur wrestling that I’ve always looked up to, you want to please these guys because they’re your coaches and you want to make them happy and deliver what they’re looking for.”
“He was a guy that I think for a long time I never was giving him what he wanted, and it was frustrating the hell out of me. Like, I’m a guy that needs that progress. I need to see progress, and I wasn’t getting it with him. It’s like, man, I’m not giving him what he needs.”
However, while speaking to the Phenom before he brawled with the Ludwig Kaiser version of Americano, something clicked for Gable, and he finally understood what was expected of him.
“He lit a fire under me, and something just clicked, and he just turned me into Greco-Roman wrestler mode for those three, five minutes, whatever it was. Inside, I lost myself. I was just in the moment like I’d never been.”
“When I got done with that and the dust settled and cleared, I was like, I get it. I see what he meant. I see what he’s been talking about. And I looked at him and told him that afterwards. I almost wanted to apologise for not understanding it up to that point, because then it seems so easy once you finally get it and it clicks. But man, he had a breakthrough for me.”
What Did The Undertaker Say To Get Through To Chad Gable?
When Cody Rhodes asked Chad Gable to go into more detail, he said Undertaker gave him a scenario to consider that he thinks was a “game changer”
“He basically says, ‘What would you do to this guy if he stole something from you?’ Right. ‘Think of that. Go out. He stole your lifeline here, and he’s taking it and claiming it as his own. What would you do to him?’ And he said that in a much more aggressive and inspirational way. But that’s what he got through to me. And I said, let’s try it, man. What a game changer.”
Since the end of his feud with El Grande Americano, Chad Gable has returned to WWE where he is currently part of the Raw roster. He will get his next big opportunity at SummerSlam, when he faces Penta for the Intercontinental Championship.
