Bret Hart spoke about his thoughts on today’s wrestling, stating that he believes it appears “too fake.”
Speaking in an appearance on the Johnny I Pro Show, Bret Hart was asked what he thinks of the modern wrestling product, and he didn’t hold back his criticisms of the wrestlers of today, stating:
“It’s too fake for me.”
The Hitman elaborated and said that he much prefers to watch wrestling from the 1990s, as he thinks the ring craft from matches back then was based on more realism than it is today. He said:
“I love watching the old 90s wrestling, I really do. When I watch my matches back, just in almost any match, even obscure Stampede Wrestling matches, there’s something about the realism, the punches and the kicks, and even just the way the presentation is. It just seems to me to be more onus put on the workmanship of learning the craft of being wrestlers.”
Hart said that wrestlers of today seem more like actors pretending to be wrestlers than actual wrestlers, and that most of them don’t actually know how to wrestle.
“I think that today’s wrestlers are actors, most of them are actors pretending to be wrestlers, and you know, they don’t actually know how to wrestle and they don’t even know what a headlock is.”
He continued with his criticism of the contemporary product by stating that there are too many “high spots” and that he misses the psychology of the 60s and 70s, where wrestling was treated more like a legitimate sport than entertainment.
“Everything is high spots, like, I want to get my move in. It’s like, I don’t know, I always thought wrestling needed to actually pretend to be wrestling. I miss the wrestling aspect and the psychology of the 60s and 70s wrestling, like the presentation of trying to, you know, pretending that it’s a real sport.”
Which WWE Wrestler Did Bret Hart Specifically Say Needs To Learn How To Throw A Punch?
Bret Hart specifically singled out one particular 19-year WWE veteran, stating that they need to learn how to throw a punch, as when they do so now it’s an “embarrassment”. The star in question is none other than former WWE Champion Sheamus. Hart said:
“Whenever I see him I’m like why don’t you take ten minutes and go down and have someone teach you how to throw a punch instead of throwing that embarrassment of a punch?”
