WWE Hall of Famer and AEW star Billy Gunn has revealed what could ultimately determine when he steps away from the ring.
Billy Gunn recently appeared at the “For The Love of Wrestling” convention in Manchester, where he took part in a fan Q&A session hosted by SoCal Val. During the discussion, the longtime veteran spoke about his current physical condition, his decades-long career in wrestling, and the progress of his sons, Austin and Colten Gunn.
Austin and Colten currently compete in AEW as the tag team The Gunns, and Gunn made it clear that their success has come from their own dedication rather than family connections.
“It’s not my genes, it’s their work ethic,” Gunn said. “They work for everything they got. And I appreciate when I hear most people come up and talk about them, which is amazing to me, because they are extremely talented. They are going to be huge stars.”
Billy Gunn Says He Will Retire When His Sons No Longer Need Him
Billy Gunn also explained that his own future in the ring is closely tied to his sons’ development. According to the veteran, he plans to continue competing until Austin and Colten no longer feel they need his guidance.
“As soon as they do that, I can retire because they won’t need me anymore,” Gunn said. “Every time I see them, I go, ‘Can I retire today? Now? How about now? Now?’ But not yet.”
The moment also carries an emotional side for Gunn, who admitted that watching his sons perform often leaves him overwhelmed with pride.
“Half the time I’ll see, if you can’t see, I’m sitting on the side crying like a big baby, watching my kids run,” he said.
Gunn, who has been involved in professional wrestling for more than three decades, currently works as both an in-ring performer and a coach in AEW, continuing to help guide the next generation of talent.
