Becky Lynch has revealed she was terrified to tell Vince McMahon she was pregnant, fearing it could have a lasting impact on women’s wrestling in WWE.
Speaking on the Happy Mum podcast, Becky Lynch reflected on the moment she informed the former WWE Chairman of her pregnancy in 2020 while she was Raw Women’s Champion and one of the company’s biggest stars.
Lynch admitted she worried her pregnancy could jeopardise the progress women had made in WWE after becoming one of the first women to headline WrestleMania.
“But I think the scariest of all was telling my boss, Vince McMahon,” Lynch said. “I called him, and I was, oh my God, I was terrified. I was terrified. I was his champion, and he’d taken this chance on women main eventing and etc. And I was like, ‘Oh no, what if I’ve ruined it for a generation of women?'”
Lynch said she quickly questioned why she should have to choose between her career and starting a family.
“Then I was like, ‘But that’s also not fair.’ You know, we should be able to do both.”
Becky Lynch Said She Felt Massive Pressure Heading Into Her Conversation With Vince McMahon
She added that she felt enormous pressure ahead of the conversation.
“That’s how my head was going into that conversation. Of like, ‘Oh, this is great for me, but now I’ve ruined women for life,’ you know? They’ll never be trusted again. That’s a lot of weight on a person’s shoulders.”
Becky Lynch announced her pregnancy in May 2020 before stepping away from WWE. She later returned to the company at SummerSlam 2021 and has since gone on to win multiple world championships.
