Former WWE Champion Batista is reportedly in talks to take on one of the most iconic roles in video game history.
According to Variety, Batista is being considered to play Kratos in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming live-action adaptation of God of War. The role has become available after Ryan Hurst, who was originally cast as Kratos earlier this year, suffered a torn bicep while filming. Amazon and Sony are now looking to recast the character before production resumes later this year.
Prime Video has already ordered two seasons of the series, which will adapt the modern God of War games centred around Kratos and his son, Atreus.
The official logline reads:
“Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”
Batista has long been linked with the role by fans thanks to his physical resemblance to the character and his growing reputation as an action star.
Batista’s Hollywood Success
After stepping away from professional wrestling full-time in 2010, Batista established himself as one of Hollywood’s most successful former WWE stars. His breakthrough role came as Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, before appearing in films including Blade Runner 2049, Dune, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Knock at the Cabin.
Although he briefly returned to WWE for one final match against Triple H at WrestleMania 35, Batista has remained focused on his acting career.
In a recent interview, he described working in Hollywood as a “luxury” compared to the physical demands and schedule of professional wrestling.
If a deal is completed, Batista would take on one of the biggest roles of his acting career as Amazon brings the acclaimed PlayStation franchise to television.
