Andrade El Idolo has opened up about his decision to leave AEW for WWE in 2024, saying personal circumstances played a major role.
The former WWE United States Champion has also expressed gratitude to AEW President Tony Khan for welcoming him back to the promotion in 2025, insisting he intends to repay that trust through his in-ring performances.
Speaking on Close Up with Renee Paquette, Andrade El Idolo reflected on his relationship with Khan and the circumstances surrounding his previous departure from AEW. Andrade joined WWE in 2015, competing as Andrade “Cien” Almas before establishing himself on the main roster.
He left WWE in 2021 and later signed with AEW, where he stayed until his contract expired in 2023. Andrade then made a surprise return to WWE during the 2024 Royal Rumble, beginning his second stint with the company.
However, he returned to AEW in 2025 after his latest WWE run failed to maintain its initial momentum. Reflecting on his decision to leave AEW the first time, Andrade explained that he faced a difficult choice between his personal life and professional ambitions.
“Personally, [it] was good, while professionally it was a little sad because my [AEW] contract was expired at this moment, so I need to pick a decision, like I need to go for a personal life – because I was married at this moment, or my professional life, so I picked my personal life,” Andrade explained.
The Mexican wrestler emphasised that his original departure from AEW was handled professionally and that he maintained a positive relationship with the promotion. He also made it clear that he remains grateful to Khan for another opportunity.
Andrade El Idolo Wants To Repay Tony Khan For Second AEW Opportunity
Andrade El Idolo believes his latest AEW run is a chance to show his full potential while contributing to the company’s success.
“Now is the moment to show who I am! I need to pay to Tony, you know, like I need to pay with my work in the ring?” he said.
Andrade explained that he wants to repay Khan’s faith through his wrestling performances while also helping other members of the AEW locker room.
“This is how I need to pay Tony for this second chance, second opportunity.”
Since returning to AEW in 2025, Andrade has already enjoyed championship success, capturing the AEW National Championship.
