AJ Styles may have stepped away from in-ring competition, but the former WWE Champion is still playing an important role behind the scenes.
Speaking on the premiere episode of The Phenomenally Retro Podcast, AJ Styles revealed that he has transitioned into a backstage position focused on talent scouting and mentoring wrestlers across the company.
According to Styles, his responsibilities will involve working with independent wrestlers, NXT talent and even members of the WWE main roster.
“It’s not just with indie talent,” Styles said. “It’ll be NXT talent and maybe some main roster talent as well.”
The former Grand Slam Champion explained that part of his job involves identifying promising talent online and helping them improve or potentially connect with WWE through initiatives such as the ID program.
AJ Styles Will Continue Travelling With WWE Despite Retirement
AJ Styles also noted that he will continue travelling to WWE shows to work directly with performers. He said he plans to attend upcoming events, such as Monday Night Raw in Seattle, to speak with talent and offer guidance.
“Sometimes you need to talk to somebody to see how they’re feeling, and maybe they want to go down to the PC and work on some stuff,” Styles said, referring to the WWE Performance Center. “I’m that guy. That’s what I’m there for.”
Another key part of Styles’ role involves helping independent wrestlers connect with the developmental system. The ID program, introduced in October 2024, allows the company to sign promising independent wrestlers while still permitting them to compete on the indie circuit.
In addition to scouting talent, Styles said he wants to focus on maintaining a positive atmosphere within the promotion’s locker rooms.
“So the morale, if I can help make sure it’s still there in a good way, I want to be that guy,” he said.
While he admitted the position is still developing, Styles expects the role to grow as he continues to work more closely with the company’s different brands.
Styles’ transition into a backstage position ensures that his decades of experience remain part of WWE’s infrastructure following his 2026 WWE Hall of Fame induction.
During the podcast, Styles also revealed a personal project tied to his new role. He confirmed that he is currently training his son to become a professional wrestler, potentially paving the way for another member of the Styles family to one day enter the company’s system.
