AJ Styles has weighed in on the debate over the greatest lucha libre wrestler of all time.
On an episode of The AJ Styles Show, Styles discussed Rey Mysterio’s career and highlighted his ability to compete against much larger wrestlers. Mysterio has spent much of his career overcoming significant size disadvantages, something Styles believes has helped demonstrate what makes him such a special performer.
“You know what the crazy thing is? I’m expecting something awesome, because Rey has done this before. He’s been in these matches his whole life,” Styles said.
Styles also highlighted Mysterio’s smaller stature compared to many of the opponents he has faced throughout his career.
“Smaller. Not a mini. He’s not a mini, but he is one of the smaller wrestlers in professional wrestling. Holy crap.”
AJ Styles Calls Rey Mysterio The ‘GOAT Of Lucha Libre’
AJ Styles ultimately offered one of his strongest compliments when discussing Rey Mysterio’s place in wrestling history.
“Rey Mysterio, GOAT of lucha libre,” Styles said.
Mysterio has enjoyed a lengthy career across several major promotions, including WCW and WWE, and has become one of the most recognisable lucha libre wrestlers in professional wrestling.
The 51-year-old has captured numerous championships during his WWE career and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2023. Styles’ comments leave little doubt about where he believes Mysterio belongs when discussing the greatest performers to emerge from lucha libre.
