With his career on the line at the Royal Rumble this Saturday, AJ Styles has quietly renewed key trademarks connected to his ring identity.
AJ Styles is scheduled to face Gunther in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with the stipulation that he must retire if he loses. Ahead of that high-stakes bout, two trademark filings tied to the former WWE Champion have surfaced with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Both applications were submitted under the name Allen Jones, Styles’ real name. One filing, under Serial Number 99619439, seeks to trademark the phrase “The Phenomenal AJ Styles.” The listed goods and services cover professional wrestling exhibitions and performances, live appearances, and the provision of wrestling-related news and information. The application notes a “First Use Anywhere” and “First Use in Commerce” date of December 2000, reflecting the early stages of Styles’ career.
A second filing, under Serial Number 99619430, relates to Styles’ familiar “P1” logo. That application includes categories for apparel such as shirts, sweatshirts, and hats, along with the same entertainment services outlined in the first filing. The “First Use” date for the logo is listed as December 2011, predating his current run with WWE.
Does WWE Own AJ Styles’ Wrestling Name?
While WWE controls the trademarks for many of its performers, there are notable exceptions where talent retain ownership of their own names and branding. AJ Styles is one of those cases, having long held the rights to both his ring name and logo.
In this instance, the filings represent renewals rather than new claims, ensuring that Styles continues to control his branding as his in-ring future hangs in the balance ahead of Saturday’s Royal Rumble showdown with Gunther.
