AEW Dynamite: Summer Blockbuster continued the road to AEW Forbidden Door on Wednesday night, featuring major matches in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament, a successful title defence by Jon Moxley, and several key developments involving AEW World Champion MJF.
The show opened with a heated confrontation between Tommaso Ciampa and Jericho. Ciampa demanded respect from Jericho, but tensions quickly boiled over into a physical brawl that required security and officials to separate the two rivals.
In the night’s first match, Jon Moxley retained the AEW Continental Championship with a hard-fought submission victory over Shane Taylor. The action continued after the bell as Shane Taylor Promotions launched a post-match assault on Moxley, Daniel Garcia and Marina Shafir. The attack led to Moxley, Garcia and Shafir later challenging Shane Taylor Promotions to a five-on-five Street Fight on Saturday’s Collision.
Don Callis then introduced Kevin Knight, who addressed his betrayal of Darby Allin at Double or Nothing and officially aligned himself with the Don Callis Family. Knight’s celebration was cut short when Allin appeared from behind and smashed a skateboard across his back before escaping through the crowd.
Mark Briscoe picked up a significant singles victory over Pac, but the bigger story came after the match. Briscoe called out AEW World Champion MJF and demanded a title opportunity. MJF rejected the challenge and mocked Briscoe, leading to a confrontation that ended with Briscoe revealing that he and MJF would captain opposing teams in a Twelve-Man Steel Cage Match at Forbidden Door. Briscoe also announced that if his team wins, he will earn an AEW World Championship match.
Andrade El Idolo continued his recent momentum by defeating Orange Cassidy in a competitive singles match. The bout featured interference from Lio Rush at ringside, but Andrade ultimately secured the victory with The Message.
The Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament continued when Maya World replaced the injured Sareee and defeated Skye Blue in a quarter-final match. World survived a strong performance from Blue and stole the win with a surprise roll-up, advancing in the tournament.
Backstage, MJF struck a deal with Don Callis to recruit members of the Don Callis Family for his team at Forbidden Door. Kevin Knight became the first confirmed member after negotiating a future opportunity for the AEW World Championship.
The main event saw Swerve Strickland battle Brody King in an Owen Hart Foundation Tournament semi-final. The physical contest saw both men push each other to the limit, but Prince Nana‘s outside involvement proved decisive. After Nana distracted King and used a foreign object behind the referee’s back, Strickland capitalised with a piledriver to secure the victory.
With the win, Strickland advanced to the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament final, where he will meet Will Ospreay at Forbidden Door.
