AEW Double or Nothing is reportedly on track to become one of the most successful pay-per-views in AEW history.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio following Dynamite, Dave Meltzer said early indicators suggest Double or Nothing could finish among AEW’s top five or six all-time pay-per-view events. While it is not expected to surpass some of the company’s biggest shows, including Sting’s retirement event at Revolution 2024, CM Punk’s AEW return match in Chicago at All Out 2021 or the first All In at Wembley Stadium, Meltzer noted that the event has already outperformed several recent benchmarks.
According to Meltzer, Double or Nothing generated AEW’s largest pay-per-view audience to date on Max and is currently trending well ahead of AEW Revolution, which had previously been the company’s strongest-performing pay-per-view since All In. Early estimates reportedly have the show running around 15 percent ahead of Revolution.
“The only numbers that I’ve seen were 15 percent up from Revolution. I think that’s a little bit higher than it’s going to end up, but again, I’ve only heard some stuff. But I think it is pretty clear that it will be among your top five, six pay-per-views in the history of AEW.”
Dave Meltzer Believes AEW Double Or Nothing’s Success Attribute To The Company Following Through On Major Stipulations
Dave Meltzer also pointed to AEW’s track record of following through on major storyline stipulations as a factor driving fan interest. He cited examples, including Cody Rhodes never challenging for the AEW World Championship after losing to Chris Jericho in 2019, Bryan Danielson remaining retired from in-ring competition after losing the AEW World Championship, and Sting staying retired following his final match.
“As far as I can recall, they haven’t reneged on a stip, and the last two pay-per-views that did real big numbers were both stip involved. Danielson said he was going to retire, and Danielson hasn’t done another match. Sting said he was going to retire. Sting hasn’t done another match. They’ve actually been really good at this.”
