Adam Copeland will have his last match in AEW, although he is still unsure of when he will retire.
At the age of 53, Adam Copeland is riding high in AEW as one half of the Tag Team Champions alongside Christian Cage. At All In on August 30th, The Rated-R Superstar will achieve one of his last wrestling goals when he competes in London’s Wembley Stadium, taking on The Young Bucks for the first time.
However, the end could be imminent, as he is not sure if he still wants to be wrestling at the age of 54. When that question was put to him in an interview with Ariel Helwani, Copeland admitted that he doesn’t think he will be, but didn’t rule out the possibility entirely.
“Right now, I’d probably say no. Righ now. A lot depends. Got ‘Beekeeper’ coming up, got ‘Percy Jackson’ coming out. There are always opportunities within that world too that pulls me away, because again, Tony is cool with me going to do these things, but that also adds on time.
I really planned on not doing any more acting this year and just focusing purely on wrestling. So, I don’t know man, It’s hard to tell. There’s some nights after a match where I’m like, ‘Woah, OK, I have a year left, tops.’ Then there’s times I’m in there and feeling great, and go, ‘Wow, man, I could probably do a little more than a year.’
“Do I want to? What do my kids want more than anything? What do they want from their dad? They know dad loves work and they know it makes dad happy, but at the same time, I think they’d rather me be home and just doing occasional acting gigs that their friends think is cool.”
After being forced to retire due to injury in 2011, Copeland says that he wants to go out on his own terms so that he can be content with his career.
“I know that if I didn’t have to retire that first time, I’m definitely not wrestling right now. This has kind of felt like the way to finally end it on my terms, or as close to my terms as possible. It needs to meet the terms of the person who runs the company, don’t get me wrong, but to not be told, ‘That’s it, you’re done.’ For me to be able to say, ‘OK, that’s it, I’m done,’ that is really the last thing for me for contentment in terms of my wrestling career.”
When asked if he planned to retire in AEW, the star confirmed that was his intention, explaining that he loves the promotion and the experience he’s had there.
“Yes, yeah. That’s what I want. I know that may disappoint a lot of people, but I love it there. I love the company. I love the attitude, I love the exuberance, I love the drive, I love the excitement that I see from the locker room. Yeah, I don’t want to go anywhere else. I’m good. I did everything I could do [in WWE] and then some. They got everything out of me and then some that they could’ve.”
Adam Copeland Believes WWE Has Become ‘Over-Rehearsed’
During the same interview, Adam Copeland reflected on the end of his WWE run, saying it felt like he was “handcuffed” creatively and couldn’t explore and try new things. This contrasts with AEW, where he has more of the freedom that was available to him in his earlier career in WWE.
