Lucha libre veteran Solar II, real name Pedro Buenrostro Gomez, has died at the age of 66.
The longtime CMLL wrestler had reportedly been dealing with health problems in the days leading up to his death. His brother, Solar I, confirmed the news in a statement shared on behalf of the family, paying tribute to both his wrestling career and his life outside the ring.
“With deep regret and immense pain, we communicate the death of Pedro Buenrostro, ‘Solar Segundo,’ dear brother, family member and friend.”
Solar II’s professional wrestling career spanned almost three decades, beginning with his debut in 1975. He spent most of his career competing for CMLL and became a familiar figure in Mexican professional wrestling during his lengthy run. One of his most notable accomplishments came in 1988 when he captured the NWA World Welterweight Championship.
CMLL Pays Tribute To Solar II Following His Death
Solar II continued wrestling into the early 2000s before ending his in-ring career in 2002. That year also saw him lose both his mask and his hair before ultimately retiring from professional wrestling.
Following confirmation of his death, CMLL paid tribute to the veteran luchador during its August 23 event. The promotion held a moment of silence in Solar II’s honour, recognising his career and contributions to lucha libre.
Solar II’s career spanned several generations of Mexican professional wrestling, with his association with CMLL making up most of his time in the ring. His family remembered him as a beloved brother, family member, and friend when they announced his death.
