‘Arachnid’ is a psychological horror short film that delves into the unravelling psyche of a young man after witnessing an entrancing dance performance. Directed by Luke Paron, the film offers a haunting exploration of obsession and identity.
The film stars Killer Kelly, known for her work in TNA, in her acting debut. She delivers a compelling performance, embodying a character that is both alluring and unsettling. It also stars Matthew Rehwoldt, also from TNA, and Lacey Creighton from Dark Side of the Ring.
In an interview, director Luke Paron praised Kelly’s natural fit for the horror genre, noting, “Killer Kelly posted this photo shoot that she had done just covered in blood and I messaged her and said, ‘Someone has got to put you in a horror movie.’ She said, ‘I know, it’s my dream to be in one.’ I said, ‘It’s my dream to make one.’”
Rehwoldt, appears in a supporting role as a therapist. His portrayal adds depth to the narrative, providing a grounded counterpoint to the protagonist’s spiraling obsession.
The score, composed by Juno Award-winning musician Kevin Comeau of the Canadian rock duo Crown Lands, is a standout element. It effectively amplifies the film’s eerie atmosphere, enhancing the tension without overshadowing the visuals.
Paron’s direction is deliberate, with a focus on the protagonist’s internal turmoil. The pacing allows the audience to fully experience the character’s descent, though some may find the slow build challenging. The cinematography complements this approach, using tight framing and shadow to evoke a sense of claustrophobia.
‘Arachnid’ is a commendable debut for both Paron and Kelly in the horror genre. It offers a chilling narrative that lingers, making it a worthwhile watch for fans of psychological horror.
