WWE superstar Asuka posted a warning to fans on social media today.
“Please don’t have romantic feelings for me. It’s meaningless—100% pointless,” she wrote on her X account.
Like many female Japanese wrestlers Asuka has keep her private life, her romantic life out of the public eye for cultural and professional reasons.
In Japan, like many idol musical stars, Joshi wrestlers like to keep their status under wraps, keep up the illusion that they are single to retain fans and maintain that image. Promotions themselves also have at times unwritten rules against making romantic relationships public for fear of losing popularity and fans.
The only glimpse into Asuka’s homelife is when Becky Lynch told Sports Illustrated a few years ago: “She really, really deserves it. And another element that people missed, because it’s not really advertised, is that she’s a working mom. She’s proven that you can do it all. You can be a bad ass and go off and have a family, you can come in and still kick more ass, have a YouTube show and be entertaining as all hell.”
Asuka followed-up with further posts today stating: “I’ve been feeling in danger recently. I’ve already consulted the police. At this rate, even if fans approach me at the airport or in the city, I will feel the possibility that something might happen, and it will scare me, making me unable to respond.”
She also warned: “I absolutely reject any romantic or personal approaches toward me. There is absolutely no possibility for others to interfere in my private life.”
She began posting earlier in the day criticizing fans for having certain expectations of her:
“Every time I achieve a victory or set a record, people desperately search for what I haven’t obtained yet and say, “You still don’t have this.” That system is endless, and I’m sick of it. I want them to stop obsessively looking for what I haven’t achieved. Their way of thinking,” she wrote.
“But the desires directed at me are endless. Do this, do that, get this… What the hell is this?” she continued.
She also posted in Japanese: “It’s more peaceful when we’re talking about games or food.”
Asuka has been on the sidelines since May due to a knee injury she required surgery for.
