AEW President Tony Khan compared the WWE to disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein in an interview on the NFL Network today.
The Senior President of Football and Analytics for his father’s Jacksonville Jaguars, Khan was a guest on the NFL Draft Kick-Off show. He was asked about the attack he suffered on AEW Dynamite. Besides wearing a neck brace Khan showed no signs of an injury as he nodded his head and moved his neck throughout the discussion.
“They changed the name to the Tony Khan Driver. Maybe I should have seen it (the attack) coming in hindsight,” Khan said about The Young Bucks altering the name of their signature move months ago.
The commentators joked about the “clues being there” as footage of the attack was played.
Khan called the move “one of the deadliest moves in pro-wrestling” and that it has been “banned in a lot of states”, namely Tennessee.
“It scared me and it scared my family,” said Khan explaining that his dad Shahid was “very angry” at the people who assaulted his son.
Khan claimed his father watches every AEW show. Khan insisted that AEW was the most successful sports start-up since the AFL.
“We are the Pepsi of pro-wrestling and we are up against a really evil juggernaut. WWE is our competitor. That is who we are facing. AEW, like the Pepsi of pro-wrestling and WWE is like the Harvey Weinstein of pro-wrestling,” he said.
The commentators chuckled and reeled Khan back in to talk about football.
Former WWE president and founder Vince McMahon is currently under federal investigation surrounding sex trafficking allegations.
Weinstein is currently in prison after facing and being convicted of numerous rape charges. Yesterday, his rape convictions in New York were overturned and another trial was ordered.
Appearing on the The Pat McAfee Show before WrestleMania, WWE chief content officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque had this to say about WWE’s competition.
“Right now, we’re up against ourselves. We’re up against the Attitude Era. We’re up against the Ruthless Aggression era, whatever you want to call it. The best of the absolute best of WWE…that’s what we’re working against,” he stated.
