WWE World Heavyweight Championship tournament announced

At the Backlash press conference held in Puerto Rico on Friday morning, WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H provided more details on the tournament to crown the new World Heavyweight Championship. The new champion will be crowned at the upcoming Night of Champions event which takes place on May 27th in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The tournament, which will feature Superstars from both the RAW and Smackdown brands, will kick off this week. On each show, there will be two triple-threat matches, with the winners of each one facing off later that night. The winners of both of those singles matches will then face off at Night of Champions, with the winner becoming the new World Heavyweight Champion. Presumably, should a Smackdown superstar win the tournament, they will join the RAW roster, as the new championship is supposed to be a permanent fixture of that brand.

As of press time, the twelve contenders in the tournament have not yet been announced. Stay tuned for further developments as they are known.
