CM Punk slams AEW, says they wanted him to work injured

In what appears to be a response to a comment by the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer, CM Punk is lifting the veil on some of the behind the scenes issues in AEW.

Meltzer posted this comment on Thursday: “Do you know why they didn’t advertise Punk vs. Moxley longer and why it had a short build? Because Punk agreed to it then AEW got a legal letter saying he wasn’t down with it and was wasn’t doing it and they didn’t know if he would come until Tony put his foot down.”

On Instagram, CM Punk appeared to respond to Meltzer’s account of what happened. He detailed the match, angle that was pitched to him by Jon Moxley and Tony Khan.

“SIGH. I wasn’t cleared to come back to wrestle yet. The plan was to wrestle at the PPV. I sat and listened to Moxley’s Rocky III idea. I explained how I’d never seen a Rocky movie. I thought the idea sucked but if the boss wanted to do it, whatever,” he wrote.

Punk then revealed Moxley’s stance on their match and then accused the company of wanting him to work injured.

“He said he wouldn’t lose to me. I’d never experienced someone refusing to lose to me. I just laughed. I asked Tony [Khan] if this was what he wanted. He said, yes. He’s the boss so I said okay but I’d need to be cleared first,” wrote Punk. “They kept saying it could just be a squash so I didn’t need to be cleared. I scoffed at that. My health is more important.”

Punk then lashed out at Meltzer and Chris Jericho.

“Dave Meltzer is a liar. [Chris] Jericho is a liar and a stooge. There were plans but plans always change but I’ll never put a company above my health ever again,” he said.
