The road to this WrestleMania for Brock Lesnar has been a rocky one, that’s for sure. Along the way, several prospective opponents have been hinted at including Bray Wyatt, Gunther, and of course, Bobby Lashley.
As it stands now it looks like Omos will be facing The Beast at the Showcase of the Immortals. According to Sports Illustrated, that wasn’t always the plan.
Justin Barrasso is reporting that Lesnar was supposed to take on “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.
“Initially, Lesnar was slated to fight Bobby Lashley at the event, Sports Illustrated learned, but that was moved to February (in a finish that protected both men) at Elimination Chamberso Lesnar could then prepare for a program against Steve Austin. Yet WWE and Austin never came to terms. Whether that happens with Austin and a different opponent is yet to be determined,” he wrote.
Neither Austin or Lesnar have commented on the negotiations publicly but it has been reported that Lesnar was offered Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania. Lesnar supposedly passed on a program with the Wyatt based on how things have worked out for others like LA Knight. Lesnar was positioned with Omos instead of Gunther as the creative forces at WWE believe that the only worthy or marquee opponent besides Omos is Gunther but he is still needs to be built up as someone who is a legitimate threat to Lesnar.
Steve Austin came out of retirement at last year’s WrestleMania to take on Kevin Owens. Austin hadn’t had a Mania match since he fought The Rock at WrestleMania 19. Only pride was on the line then as The Rock just wanted to prove he could beat Austin at WrestleMania and he did.
