Kozina’s Road Diaries: It’s all a blur

Day 15 of 21.

More car troubles from K-Dos as he pops a tire in the middle of nowhere.

After so many days being on the road, everything becomes a blur. You’re aware of call times, and going to an after-party sponsor, etc., but as to what day it is, and any sense of a “normal” life schedule, well, it has long been left behind. In its place lie empty protein drink bottles, loose and floating Subway sandwich bags and wrappers of eaten beef jerky from days gone by.

More vehicle troubles have thrown the tour off a smooth route. Injuries are starting to add up on several guys, and I see, almost with each day, somebody limping, horribly bruised up, or sporting athletic tape across the shoulder.

Real life also kicks in, as we lost one of our guys due to a family emergency, and he had to bow out early, and head home.

The other night, after the Medicine Hat show, half of the crew drove onward to Regina to stay the night, and the minivan they were driving in blew a tire, spun out, and criss-crossed the lanes before launching into the tall grass in the soft soil that is beside the highway. That was the text we got at 230 a.m. Their tow truck didn’t arrive til 5 a.m., so you can imagine how the rest of their day went. Some days the reality is, you get NO rest.

Canada is a beautiful, yet unforgiving landscape. Only the strongest will survive physically AND mentally intact. Don’t take my word for it — ask any of the guys who have done this over the years. It’s no secret.

I’ve always tried to make it clear to the young guys that join the tour that this is a different kind of beast, and I can explain it day and night, but until you experience it for yourself, you cannot really know.

Fueling up the ring truck before heading out for the next town.

The shows have been stellar, because we are jam-packed with world class talent, and feedback from fans have been off the charts. Even for the summer, which is always difficult to draw good houses, we have had out biggest crowds yet, in Calgary, Medicine Hat, and Regina. It’s a great sign that we are making the progress as a company that we have hoped to make!

In-ring tribute for the late Smith Hart in Calgary with members of the Hart family and old Stampede wrestlers.

One of the greatest treats this tour is having Nikita Koloff onboard. He fits in with us like you can’t imagine. I think every one of us has had the chance to sit and talk with him. He’s been watching every single match and offering amazing feedback, and on my end, he sits with a smile on his face while I ramble on asking question after question about the Crockett-era NWA, how business was done, the psychology and style of that time. He is only too happy to go into great detail as we sit day after day, wherever we may be and explain it all. The funniest thing is, me asking a question and it’ll trigger something in him, and he’ll light up and immediately start with “Ahhh, DUDE! Check this out…” before recalling how something was done. I chuckle to myself, because I say the same thing… Ahh, dude!!!

So here we sit, en route to Moosomin, Saskatchewan, where tonight we invade their Civic Centre. Word is one of the locals has 25 pounds of meat that’ll be BBQ’ed for us after the show, so… fingers crossed!!!

Last night was a good night of rest for everyone, so I’m hoping things settle into a good groove, free from injuries. The next few days are pretty short drives, so it’ll be a great time to get more rest, workout, and take in the sights.
