WINDSOR, Ont. — Border City Wrestling showed its “excellence” on Saturday night with a big show at St. Clair College’s Sportsplex. The card featured the likes of Bret “Hitman” Hart, Jon Bolen, Kongo Kong, Chris Sabin and Scott Steiner. For the report, we turned to nine-year-old Matthew McFarlin (son of photographer Brad McFarlin) for his take.
But first, the results from the show, which was the first at the new Sportsplex facility, and it was standing-room only for the initial pro wrestling show there.
“We here at Border City Wrestling would like to thank the 1,500-plus people who attended our biggest show ever!” the promotion wrote on its Facebook page. “We hope everyone had an amazing night and the wrestlers had nothing but great things to say about the fans! We look forward to entertaining you all again in the near future!”
RESULTS:
– Joe Coleman w/Taeler defeated Bryan Castle
– Brent Banks defeated Kid Hybrid
– BCW Heavyweight Champion Jon Bolen and Kongo Kong, managed by Scott D’Amore, lost to Cody Deaner and Scott “Big Poppa Pump” Steiner
– Bret Hart came out to a standing ovation and gave a quiet emotional speech thanking the people of Ontario for their love and support throughout his career
– Joe Doering, the AJPW Triple Crown Heavyweight Champion, took on #1 Challenger Rhino. Doering left with the belt after pinning Rhino with a devastating clothesline
– The main event featured The Time Splitters — the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions (Alex Shelly and Kushida) vs Phil Atlas and Chris Sabin, vs Michael Elgin and Psycho Mike Rollins vs Tyson Dux and Brad Martin. After a near 30-minute non-stop battle filled with dozens of high flying maneuvers, Atlas and Sabin emerged as the victors
From Matthew: “I liked the four team tag match best of all. It seemed like there were always three or four guys in the ring at the same time. I couldn’t figure out how the referee was able to keep track of it all. I saw the referee was wearing an earplug of some sort, and Dad said that Vince was probably telling him what to do from the dressing room. I didn’t get it. You know how at ROH shows, at the end of the main event the fans always start a ‘this is awesome chant’? Well in this match they were chanting it almost right from the start.”
A veteran of many shows at this point, Matthew offered a little more: “I really liked that there was almost three hours of non-stop wrestling, and they didn’t waste half the show doing promos in the ring. It was almost 11:15 when we left but it didn’t take that long to cross the bridge back to America,” said the resident of greater Detroit. “We had to stop at Customs, and the security guard, who looked a lot like Kane wanted to talk to me, so Dad’s friend rolled down my window. He asked who my favorite wrestler was, and of course I said, ‘John Cena.’ The guy said, ‘So you saw John Cena tonight?’ And I said, ‘No, he wasn’t on this show.’ We got to keep going, and on the way home Dad was mumbling a lot of bad words under his breath, I didn’t get it. But I had a great time.”
