Simply the best: Aries stuns Roode to win TNA world title at Destination X

Last year at this time, Austin Aries didn’t even have a TNA contract. Now, one year later, Aries has reached the apex of the company. Aries upset Bobby Roode to win the TNA World Heavyweight Championship on Sunday at TNA Destination X, capping an improbable odyssey for The Greatest Man That Ever Lived.

The Impact Zone in Orlando was at a fever pitch for the main event as both Roode and Aries were introduced.

Aries shows up Roode early with some amateur wrestling and then some head slaps. He follows that by relaxing on top of the ring ropes. He’s all over Roode here but Roode grabs a head scissors and returns a slap to the head.

Aries escapes and they go to the outside where Aries gets the best of it. He throws Roode back in the ring and goes to the top but misses a missile dropkick, crashing and burn as Roode side steps him. Roode goes to work now.

Aries, though, gets Roode on the apron and knocks him off. He hits the back ropes and comes through for the suicide dive, but Roode moves! Wow. Never seen him miss that. Back in the ring, Roode with a spear and then puts a boot in Aries’ chest. Front suplex and then a rear waistlock into a body scissors. Roode drops Aries again with a knee to the gut.

Roode drives Aries into the corner and then whips him into the opposite corner. Roode takes a moment to tell Aries to give up, that Aries isn’t in his league. Roode with a flapjack for two. Another rear wasitlock for Roode but Aries elbows out. Roode goes for the knee to the gut again, but Aries sees it coming and rolls Roode up for two. Roode, though, quickly regains momentum with a big lariat.

Roode gets in Aries’ face and mouths off, but this fires Aries up. They start unloading on each other and Aries drops Roode with a huge roaring elbow. He drives his shoulder into Roode and clotheslines him over the top and now he crushes Roode with the Heat Seaking Missile.

In the ring and Aries is also able to hit the missile dropkick. Aries really heating up. He charges Roode in the corner but Roode catches him with a power slam. Roode stalks Aries and goes for a spear, but Aries sprawls out and locks in the Last Chancery. Roode nearly taps but is able to escape and he locks in the Crossface. Aries slides out and puts Roode back in the Last Chancery. Roode is able to rake Aries’ eyes to break the hold.

They go to the top and Roode wants a superplex but Aries knees him in the head and sends him down. He goes for the 450 Splash but Roode moves and Aries rolls through it but runs right back into the Double R Spinebuster. Roode throws Aries into the post shoulder-first and grabs him in the Crossface right in the middle of the ring. Aries is fighting it but Roode can’t get full extension because of the sweat and Aries makes the ropes.

Roode goes to the outside and grabs the title belt but referee Brian Hebner takes it away. With Hebner looking away, Roode hits Aries with a low blow but Aries kicks out at the last second. Roode gets into an argument with Hebner and this allows Aries to hit the big corner dropkick. Crowd to its feet now as they sense the Brainbuster but Roode slips out of it and shoves Aries into Hebner. He hits Aries with the title belt and grabs Hebner. He makes the cover but Aries somehow kicks out. Crowd can’t believe it.

Roode wants the Perfect Plex but Aries counters into a small package for two. Roode still down. Aries kicks him right in the head, grabs him up for the Brainbuster and hits it! Aries into the cover, 1-2-3! It’s all over! Unbelievable! Austin Aries is the new TNA World Heavyweight Champion, ending Roode’s 256-day reign as champion.

Red and white colored confetti comes down through the sky in the Impact Zone as Aries celebrates one of the most improbable world title wins in professional wrestling history.
