Flair given key to the city in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, NC – Twenty-five years ago, the Greensboro Coliseum hosted the inaugural Starrcade in front of a capacity crowd of 16,000 fans. Ric Flair regained the NWA World Heavyweight title from Harley Race in a historic cage match. Friday night, to commemorate this historic event, Greensboro, North Carolina, presented Ric Flair with the key to the city.

Fans were on hand at the Proehlific Park Sports Complex to celebrate and take photos with “The 16-Time World Champion”, along with the original NWA World Heavyweight Title Belt and the robe worn at Starrcade in 1983.

Also appearing at the event was Greensboro’s own “Sweet” Stan Lane teaming up with “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton as they took on The Rock and Roll Express. This was the first time in twenty years that these four have wrestled each other. Lane took the win in front of his hometown crowd over Robert Gibson, with a little help from their special manager for the night, Sal Corrente.

NWA Legend George South tried to school up-and-comer Ricky Steamboat Jr. but Steamboat managed a backslide for the pin. South has been teaching Steamboat Jr. the ropes.

The action continues Saturday night in Charlotte, North Carolina, with another second-generation wrestler making his debut. Reid Flair teams with his brother David with Ric Flair in their corner. They will be facing The Nasty Boys with their manager Jimmy Hart. Visit highspots.com for more details.
