TORONTO — “The King of the Mountain” Jeff Jarrett was back in Canada Friday night, the country in which he claimed his NWA World Heavyweight title. He took a few moments to sum up the current state of TNA for SLAM! Wrestling.
This Sunday is TNA’s big Bound For Glory pay-per-view, a show the Nashville-based promotion is pushing as its own WrestleMania, er, Super Bowl.
Jarrett is scheduled for the main event, defending his gold (won September 15 in Windsor from Raven) against Kevin Nash.
“Every pay-per-view is important, but this is the first one since we (debuted) on Spike TV,” Jarrett told SLAM! Wrestling at the launch party for The Fight Network, in which Jarrett competed in a non-title fatal four-way match against Rhino, Sabu and Samoa Joe. “This is like our Super Bowl. We’ve got Tito Ortiz coming in, we’ve got an Ultimate X match, Monsters Ball, the 30-minute Iron Man match … it’s going to be a hell of a show.”
Having been involved in the TNA promotion right from the start, and one of the powers behind the scenes (word is that he is head booker at the moment), Jarrett has had his eye on the bottom line as well, watching the ratings for Impact on Spike TV, which have been good. “Of course we always want better, but everything’s going well.”
Recently, TNA and Spike TV announced a primetime special for Thursday, November 3rd, at 9 p.m. ET, as TNA was going to be bumped from its normal, 11 p.m. ET slot on Saturday, November 5th by a UFC special.
It’s an unique chance for the three-year-old promotion to attract some new, mainstream fans in a great timeslot.
“We’re very excited about being able to take it to the next level, and a prime time special will absolutely do that,” said Jarrett.
The primetime special and upcoming Impact episodes will be taped this Tuesday and Wednesday at the studio at the Universal theme park in Orlando, Florida.
